Notes for Reading Groups and Book Clubs

Several reading groups have sent in some of the issues they discussed having read The Redeemed. Here is a sample of some of the topics.

1. Do you understand the attraction of charismatic churches?

2. Why are Americans particularly attracted to this form of worship? Does it have have any validity?

3. Is the pornography business a threat? How should it be tackled?

4. Is Father Lucas Starr - and the Catholic church - right to say that evangelicals lack humility?

5. A large portion of the American population believe in the literal truth of heaven and hell - are they useful concepts in the 21st century?

6. The current British law says that material is obscene 'if it tends to deprave and corrupt'. Is this a good test? Could it be improved upon?

7. Should churches be allowed to carry out exorcisms?

8. How do we explain phenonema like the Toronto Blessing, when otherwise rational people find themselves rolling around on the floor claiming to have been overtaken by the Holy Spirit?

9. Is it a cause for alarm that some of the world's most powerful people profess profound Christian belief?

10. Did you finish the book feeling more or less of a believer?
